Chapter Fourteen

I had a lot of time to think while we waited for the ambulance, and then on the trip deep into the heart of Southwest. I kept hearing Anora’s voice in my head. You’re in too deep.

It’s not like the ghost voice of my sister was wrong, though. I’d gotten shot for them. I knew it was a distinct possibility when I’d stepped out between the buildings, and I hadn’t even hesitated. I never got shot on my jobs, not for other people.

And I needed to start thinking about after. They probably weren’t going to be too happy with me, and besides, was I just going to give up my life for them? Hardly.

If it got around that I’d told them about the contract, that could be bad. I didn’t think it would get around, but I didn’t know for sure. One of the things about working with other people – you never knew what they were going to do. Except Anora, I could always count on her.

I thought about what Cavarra had said, and maybe that was the answer. I could get him to force me to talk. It would probably still shake some confidence, but as my dad always said, everyone has their breaking point. He would just happen to push me to mine. And as long as I didn’t make it a habit…

Bel was concerned. The ambulance was really just a converted armored transport truck, and he crowded into the back with the rest of my companions. He sat near my head, the hand from my uninjured arm disappearing in his. “Your mom’s gonna kill me for letting you get shot.”

I shook my head and tried to give him a reassuring smile. The truck didn’t exactly have the best shocks, and every time it went over a bump, another jolt of pain pushed through me. “She’s gonna be happy you waited until they started shooting into the division to pick them off. You did what you were supposed to do, Bel. And I got myself shot.” As much as I wished it wasn’t true.

“Because they’re gonna twist their report when they take it up the Mountain, and Von will be able to slap his security footage down on the table and tell them to go fuck themselves.” I squeezed his hand. “It’s good. This isn’t the first time I’ve been shot.”

“I know.” His expression was still grim. “She’s not here right now, you mom.”

“I know. But your doc’s still good.” I lay on a stretcher fastened to the bed in the back of the truck, and I lifted my head to see the blood soaking through Von’s borrowed shirt. “This isn’t even the worst one. I took a bullet through my side a few years ago.” That was one of the shiny scars that Von had noticed when we’d met.

Bel gave me a small smile. “I still get to worry.”

“Yeah, yeah.” His care made me smile in return. He was considerably younger than me, the result of an affair Damyan had after she and Mom broke up.
